What is World Sustainability Day?
World Sustainability Day is celebrated annually on the last Wednesday of October, and in 2024 will take place on 30th October. A global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about sustainability and the importance of adopting practices that protect the environment for future generations, World Sustainability Day focuses on promoting sustainable development, reducing carbon footprints, conserving natural resources, and encouraging individuals, businesses, and governments to act responsibly in preserving the planet. This day encourages everyone to reflect on their environmental impact and take steps to reduce waste, save energy, and support sustainable practices.
HumaniTea and sustainability
Our Matcha, Earl Grey and Agave Nectar are organic
We ethically source our genuine organic tea from Japan (Matcha) and Africa (Earl Grey) and the agave nectar used to naturally sweeten our drinks from Mexico. When tea is organic it means no pesticides have been used and we ensure our suppliers engage in ethically and sustainable practices. You can read more about our tea here.
We use oat milk instead of dairy
Not only is oat milk one of the most eco-friendly milk alternatives available in terms of both lower emissions (72% decrease in carbon emissions) and water (92% decrease) and land usage (91% decrease), it is perfect for people who are vegan or lactose-intolerant.
Our cans are infinitely recyclable
Made from aluminium, our cans can be recycled again and again without losing quality or changing its fundamental properties. Recycling aluminium – known as a green metal – helps conserve natural resources and non-renewable fossil fuels, requires significantly less energy than producing new aluminium from raw materials, and reduces the emission of gasses like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Our packaging is recyclable
We package our drinks to send to you in cardboard boxes that can of course be recycled or used again. And in 2021 we partnered with Bagboard to make the world a bit greener. Bagboard created reusable paper smart bags in a bid to replace single-use plastic bags, which you can read more about here.
We give back to wellbeing and sustainability projects
As a social enterprise HumaniTea aims to give 5% of our profits back to projects that align with our mission and values, including those that promote wellbeing and sustainability. Examples include donating cans to community care and wellbeing retreats, yoga classes, lower emissions initiatives, and stalls talking the climate crisis. In addition, we donated 5% of revenue from our 2020 crowdfunding round to WHO (the World Health Organisation), and collaborated with non-profit organisations such as Go Inspire Wimbledon, which inspires women and creates connections to improve mental health and wellbeing. We also donate cans as prizes or hold stalls at events. If you’re interested in collaborating with us for similar projects, please email us.
Marking Sustainability Day
If you’re thinking what you can do for Sustainability Day and beyond, some tips include:
- Calculating your own carbon footprint
- Checking ingredients of where the products you consume come from and making a conscious effort to only buy those where they are sourced ethically and sustainably
- Ensuring you are recycling empty packaging correctly as recommended
- Reducing use of plastic or buying products with plastic
- Trying not to waste food and liquids
- Improving energy efficiency and use less water at home, which helps reduce your bills as well as your carbon footprint
- Being mindful of the ways you travel and how often (for example, walking, cycling or taking public transport more where possible)
- Considering consuming more plant-based food and drink alternatives
