Celebrate World Environment Day with HumaniTea

On June 5th, many countries around the world will be celebrating World Environment Day. This is the perfect day to start thinking about how to be more environmentally conscious, and do more for the future of our planet.

Every year a new country hosts this special day and in 2021, Pakistan will be the host for the first time ever, and a virtual conference will be held on June 4.

History of World Environment Day

The idea of a World Environment Day was first suggested in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly, but it wasn’t until 1974 that the idea became reality.

Each year, a new country hosts the event, and there is a different theme every year. The first ever theme was ‘Only One Earth.’

Ever since then around 145 countries, big corporations, governments, and humans around the globe take part and do what they can for the environment. This year will be a little different as we will have to celebrate it digitally.

People around the world have celebrated in many ways such as; picking up litter, organising events in school or work, or starting a campaign on recycling.

This years theme

The theme of this World Environment Day focuses on ‘Ecosystem Restoration’, a very important part of the world. We have destroyed half of our wetlands, and by 2050, it is estimated that 90% of coral reefs could be gone.

UN.org says:  “Ecosystems are defined as the interaction between living organisms – plants, animals, people – with their surroundings. This includes nature, but also human-made systems such as cities or farms.”

Ecosystem restoration means reversing and preventing the damage done to nature, and the focus on this is ‘reimagine, recreate, restore.’ This special day will kickstart the UN’s decade on ecosystem restoration, which is a 10-year mission to revive habitats and nature.

By preventing more damage to these ecosystems, it means that we protect those that are still intact, as well as healing others. Healthier ecosystems and biodiversity mean that we will have better soil, better land, and a better store of greenhouse gases that can help the Earth.

How is HumaniTea environmentally friendly?

Here at HumaniTea, we pride ourselves on being a brand that is 100% plant based, meaning we do not use any animal products and are dairy free and vegan. We also donate 5% of profits to fund wellbeing and sustainability initiatives in the local area.

Instead of cow’s milk, both flavours are brewed with oat milk- which is one of the most eco-friendly milks due to its minimum water usage and low emissions.

As well as this, we craft our beverages into recyclable aluminium cans and we ensure that our products are ethically sourced and sustainable.

If you want to change your diet, or perhaps become a little bit more aware of what you are consuming, we suggest you try one of our vegan tea lattes!

They come in two flavours- Earl Grey Oat Milk Classic Tea Latte and Matcha Oat Milk Green Tea Latte. Both are refreshing, creamy, and provide you with natural energy throughout the day.

Small ways to help the environment

We have outlined some ways to help the environment on our Tik Tok page, and you can view it here. We have also written these pointers down for a little extra advice!

  • Start walking more:

This is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and protect those ecosystems! Walking is great for many reasons; exercise, mental health, and to be out in nature. If you start walking instead of getting a bus or driving, this can help the environment.

  • Conserve water:

A lot of us waste gallons of water without even realising it, but water waste is so damaging for our planet. You can start saving water by having shorter showers, not letting the tap run when you brush your teeth, and using your washing machine less.

  • Buy a reusable water bottle to reduce plastic use:

It is great to reuse plastic water bottles, but it is even better if you don’t use plastic at all… reusable metal

bottles are the best way forward, as you can use this for years! The cheapest ones are around £5, and can really help you limit your plastic use.

  • Be energy efficient:

Using a lot of energy such as electricity and gas can really add up in the household. To save costs and the environment, you can do something really simple- switch off lights. Yes, if you realise that a light doesn’t have to be on, then turn it off. It’s a small thing that can go a long way.

  • Try Plant-based alternatives

The consumption of animal products has caused habitats to be destroyed and greenhouse gas emissions to increase. If you can’t commit to going vegan or vegetarian, then start by swapping certain things for plant-based products. Our HumaniTea lattes are a great alternative to dairy, and they taste amazing!
